The National St John Council of Zimbabwe
St John is a major International healthcare charity, accredited to the United Nations, whose organisations provide first aid, health care and humanitarian programmes in over 40 countries. St John International, based in London, UK supports the work of St John around the world to provide healthcare to some of the world's most vulnerable communities.
St John Association Zimbabwe is part of the family of The Order of St John London, it started operating in Zimbabwe in 1920. Its purposes and objectives being to promote and encourage the spirit and moral strengthening of mankind in accordance with the first great principle of the Order embodied in the Motto “Pro Fide”, encourages and promotes all works of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering or danger, without distinction of race, class or religion and the extension of the second great principle of the Order embodied in the Motto “Pro Utilitate Hominum”. Our mission is to prevent and relieve sickness and injury and to enhance the health and well being of people of all races and creeds in Zimbabwe.
The St John Association of Zimbabwe started when two members of the National Railways of Rhodesia staff began to teach first aid from St John Ambulance manuals. The first St. John Centre was established in 1925 in Bulawayo to meet the needs of railway staff through such training. Units of St John were set up in Bulawayo and Hwange during 1936 followed in time by the establishment of the same in Harare Gweru and Mutare. The National St. John Council was established in 1981 after independence.
To be the leading provider of effective, qualitative first aid training for primary and home based care and the provision of primary care ambulance services.
To work with the community and other societal organizations in saving lives and alleviating suffering through the provision of First Aid skills and Ambulance services
